About this Project

Welcome to the Marion Derecho Digital Archive created by the Marion Public Library. On August 10, 2020, a severe windstorm called a derecho swept through the Midwest impacting communities in its path with its winds up to 140mph. Costs were in the billions of dollars, and the damage to crops and vegetation could be seen from satellite images in space. The derecho was the costliest and worst natural disaster in Marion’s history with widespread power and internet outages, limited cell phone communication, and impassable roads. Among those buildings damaged was the Nancy Miller Marion Public Library at 1095 6th Ave. Because of severe damage to the roof, the building was permanently closed as previously planned construction on the new library was set to begin.

This project began as a way to preserve the stories of those affected by the derecho in Marion, connect neighbors, and provide an outlet for community healing.
